Enron ~ the inside story

Posting after a long time.....i had that urge then and now but just was busy with MBA and all the assignments and any time left was spent in catching on the lost sleep.Few days back i had watched this documentary "Enron -- the smartest guys in the room:.........here goes my take on the whole story.

The documentary narrates the story of the debacle of Enron with interviews and first hand accounts of what happened and who were the people involved. Its more thrilling then any serial crime thriller. It just saps you into the celluloid and you feel that you are living the story. It has got all the ingredients of what can go wrong in the corporate environment and puts things into perspective for someone like us(B-grads, who are going to re-write the rules of management). It was a kind of refresher of all the Business ethics sessions that Sreenath sir and maam had conudcted and a review of all the concepts that they very lucidly communicated to us.This movie talks about corporate governance failure,irregularities,principal-agency issues, unethical behaviour, insider trading, rationalization, frauds etc....Its like BusinessEthics-in-a-nutshell.

Enron story was worse than a nightmare for its employees and the economy of USA.You dont believe it.Then watch it.I still cant believe how all this happened. It was just too well orchestrated but someday it had to collapse. And one word that explains it all - "GREED".

P.S.Be Warned. There is some(very minimal) sexual graphics content.

Saving Private Ryan

This is undoubtedly the best war movie ever made and that was expected when you have great names - Steven Spielberg and Tom hanks associated with it.This movie tells you all about war - the pain, the loss, patriotism, cowardice, selfishness, greed, helplessnes, duty etc.War is the greatest curse that humans can incur upon themselves.Everything about the movie is perfect. You cant help but get involved in the movie,it makes you think and react and plays with your emotions. If i had to rate the movie against some parameters then they would be the following:

Screenplay -- 10/10 (I am sure there was Spielbergs touch to this)

Music -- 8/10 (The background score is very moving and you can feel the pride that the soldiers have for their country.I think most of it is Violin with some piano, trumpet etc.)

Direction -- 20/10 (the intenisty of the movie can be attributed to splendid work by Speilberg. You would be shaken amd stirred by the time the movie ends.In a few of the scenes i felt restless - the one where Upham is standing with the ammo and ......watch this scene :-) ,cant reveal much.It was simply powerful.I could feel adrenaline gushing inside.I have never ever hated any fictional character more than "Upham" - son of a bitch)

Acting -- 15/20 (Tom Hanks has got to be the best Hollywod actor of al times. This charming actor can make you laugh, think, cry everything with great ease.A few of other Tom hanks movies i would recommend are Forrest Gump,Castaway,Terminal etc.)

This movie shows what a soldier is made of.For a soldier an order is meant to be obeyed,be it good or bad.He is not supposed to think, but just follow it.Is this professionalism?? Is this servitude?? Whatever it is,this one way flow of information and its deliverance is what is needed in dire situations like wars.Hope mankind has learnt its lessons from World War I & II and we can just pray that a world war III never occurs, but with all this nuclear proliferation and deadly biological weapons you never know what can go wrong.

Watch the movie....but not with your girlfriend ,nahin to break up pakka hai :-).....Enjoy!!

Friday Night Movie - Inglourious Basterds

***************DONT WORRY NO SPOILERS IN IT**************

Came home early at 10:00 p.m. (tats early for me the way things have been in the last few days). And browsed my torrentz collection to see what would be a good movie to watch on a relaxed Friday night. I had a few choices and i picked up Inglorious Basterds i.e.I.B. (Soumya and Chintu's recommendation).Being a Tarantino direction i was kind of prepared for some gut-wrenching gory scenes with lots and lots of blood everywhere. If you havent watched any of Tarantino's movie then watch Kill bill (Vol 1 & Vol 2) to get a taste of his movies. One word would describe such movies,at least for me,REPULSIVE.But i had heard that I.B. was different, so i thought lets give a verdict tonight on Tarantino.

The major reason i took the risk of watching a Tarantino movie was because the script was set during the World War 2 and was about Hitler and the Nazi's occupation of Europe(at least most of it if i am not mistaken).I simply love war movies. The movie was 2 and a half hours long.It was impressive and i would say i liked it,except the "I.B. cutting the scalp of a German",that was crude and only a guy like tarantino can think of such scenes. This movie is a fantasy,or as Shossana ,the female protagonist, put it "the face of Jewish Vengeance".All those who know about Nazis and what they did to Jews would love this movie and would find some consolation with the way it all ended. The screenplay was good, neither fast paced nor very slow. And the best part about the movie was the French dialogues which made it all the more graceful. Also the background rock music in "dramatic" scenes were apt. My favourite scene would be the "rendezvous of the German actress and the I.B." and the "Hans Landas's visit to the French country man's house".Both the scenes were quite tense and one didnt have a clue as to what would happen next.In the former scene at least you could keep guessing but the Part one was simply amazing,no one would have expected such an ending. Overall its a good movie and would interest people with some inclination to historic stories, the world wars,Nazis etc. What could be better in the movie??......Let me think.....The Hitler look-alike is the worst i have seen in all movies/documentaries made till day on Hitler. And yes last but not the least,Brad pitt acted well. But if u want to see Brad pitt at his best then watch "Fight-Club".It will blow you away.

So watch I.B. and raise a toast to "Down with Hitler and the Nazis".And Kudos to Tarantino.

3 IDIOTS - "All is Well"

Give me some sunshine
Give me some rain
Give me another chance
I wanna grow up once again
Na na na….Na na na….Na na na….Na na nana na….

My whole day went humming these lines and i am sure it had the same effect on you.Kudos to Shantanu Moitra and Swanand Kirkire (never heard of this name before, but definitely promising).

What a movie.....Simply awwweesssssommme. After a long time i watched a movie in a theatre and laughed my heart out.At the same time there were some good twists and some tense moments which would shake you.Another Hirani direction, in the lines of Munnabhai, with great script, flawless screenplay, witty dialogues and superb acting by Aamir aka Rancho.Amir khan u are the undoubted "badshah" of Bollywood,Jahampana kabool kijiye :-).But it wouldnt have been the box office hit it is now, without the support of Maddy aka Farhan and Sharman aka Raju, who were at the best of there elements and great actors in their own.

I think this is one movie even the hard lined critics will recommend watching again and again. In fact Vidhu should put up a challenge in the theatres reading "No one can see it just once".The cinematography was too good with great locales ,be it the landscapes of Shimla or the barren beauty of Ladakh.

Despite all the magic of the movie it got itself into controversies.First it was Chetan bhagat putting in his blog how "hurt" he was because his name wasnt associated with the success of the movie and accusing Vidhu and Co. of plagiarism. Well Chetan you have put the foot on the wrong pedal.I think everyone is aware of the contract between you and Vidhu. But Vidhu should try to control his temper, maybe Aamir can help him in this too. And then there were some NGOs who accused the movie of glorifying "ragging". Its really silly to even think of that, after reading the disclaimer at the beginning of the movie and nowhere does the movie seem to convey the message that "suicide" is a way to end your troubles. On the contrary it has brought attention to the issue which nowadays is taking root in our society and needs to be controlled before it blows out of proportion.Well folks dont make much noise "All is weeeellllllllll......."

Like most of Aamir khans movie - RDB,DCH,TZP this movie too inspires you to follow your heart and do things that you are passionate about. It refreshes your college days and takes you back to a time when you had the zeal to do anything you belived in,your hostel days, woh rath 4 baje tak badminton khelna, woh 5 km door rath ko railway station jana coz cigarrettes kahin nahin milti itne raath......and parties....man have you been to a wet party where everyone is drenched and the room is full of water till ankle and the walls are kind of electrocuting and you have best of bollywood dance numbers playing. Those were the best days of my life. And yes we had a Rancho too in our college, Mr. kool - Anuraag Pattnaik. Dude where are you?? They have a made a movie on you....you gotta watch it :-)

A great experience....wholesome entertainment....the credits are rolling but "dil maange more" :-)

New year - my wishlist!!

Wish you all a Happy New Year!! Hope this new year brings you lots of happiness and may all your wishes come true.Every one has wishes, every one wants to be happy.

We can forget all the bad things that happened to us last year.We can put our past behind, whether it was happy or sad. At a personal level it was the best time of my life, as i got married to my "lady love". My professional life wasnt very rewarding, inspite of my good efforts to do well. As some one has rightly said "you are only as good as your BOSS thinks", thats the harsh truth :-(.

I have made a wishlist and hope to see most of them fufilled. One is a selfish one and the other is for the society around me.Here they go:

Selfish Wishlist - "GOD please shower your blessings on us, and please start with me :-)"
  •  A good GMAT score (range of 740-760),calls from all IIMs,at least 1 college from US and finally at least 1 convert. I hope i am not asking much.........I want to spend my next summer in some college, noy sitting in front of my system planning SIPs.
  • 99%le in CAT/XAT/FMS,and at least one convert, before IIMs bar me from appearing in CAT :-)......
  • Promotion!!Promotion!!Promotion!!.............i badly need one........I am fed up of "playing the role of a TL", all the software professionals will symapthise with me on that.........I forgot to add, promotion with a good rating.
  • Italy lifting the World Cup again....Go Azurriiiis.........
  • Hmmmm what next ....i wish i had a longer wishlist :-).........wait i got one..........a lucky draw of 100000000, or maybe an entry into a reality show like Big Boss.....and soon i am picked by RGV/YJ productions .........

Wishlist that needs to be fulfilled if we want a better planet

  • End of terrorism throughout the world.....we have seen enough of bloodshed.
  • End of poverty and military rules in African countries
  • Global warming becoming a myth
  • Good & civilized politicians...at least in India :-).
  • Donations to charitable organisations made compulsory.....I am sure every one has the heart to help a person in need, but rarely do we go out of our way to do so and thats because "mind rules over the heart". Arent we saving the money so that we can buy that Honda Civic,or that 50 lac house.....dude agreed you need that Honda Civic to show off,but giving back to the society is important too....you dont think so....well kool...what if its a government rule?
I think now i should go to sleep....its quite late and i am planning to go to ofice early tomorrow.....its time to DREAMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm...........good night!!
